Trespass U.S.

My work deals specifically with the concept and act of trespassing. By documenting places that people go to spray and paint, or to shelter from their homelessness, I am attempting to illustrate the way that these two distinct activities at the lowest rung of society are carefully ignored.

Vandal art and territorial displays decorate the places beneath infrastructure where the homeless go in order to remain invisible. Whenever the art, slogans of protest, or temporary shelters come into sight somebody is paid to cover them with grey paint or sweep them into dust.

This ancient law provides protection from trespass against persons, their possessions, and their intellectual property. Now, however the onus has become inseparable from notions of private property and ownership.

Who owns this land? Which land is being trespassed in our name?

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass

Biography

After running Children's Animation Workshops, and Photography workshops for adults in the UK I began making music videos, and in 1996 relocated to the US to pursue a career in Art Direction. For the next five years I designed and decorated videos, commercials and features, which in turn led to a prolific Television career including eight years on the hit show "Scrubs." At this time I was limited to shooting mainly at night, attracted by working with available light, and the surreal appearance of motion picture sets at night. I have found, however, that the sets look real, they are after all designed and lit to do so, and the evocative atmospheres I seek mainly come from behind the scenes of real life. Much of my work has appeared in television, and thus inspired a celebrity collector following.
